That was a show for The Grateful. The flow was a beautiful two way street, small ball style. In contrast City Field which was a whoosh of East Coast energy; Hold onto your head time! Hershey had a the Boys of Summer going to work and doing what only they can do feel to it. IMHO they always play the crowd. At Hershey the crowed played the band. If Mickey can play sunspots he most certainly can vibe with a kid in the second to last row of the balcony. Once that flow is established the subtlety the band achieves truly is on the Edge Of Magic.
The first set was fun. I have come around on Easy Answers. My first experience with it was at one of those first sets you mentioned that didn't quite click. I feel like group think had a lot to do with it. "Cheese it up Bobby" t-shirts were making the rounds. I was a kid. I let the "No, No, Noers" into my head and had contempt prior to investigation. By the time they closed a first set at DC with it, I believed we must be entitled to a Music-Answers sandwich. When they ended the set with a stand alone EA I sat down right in front of Jerry. Hindsight is 20/20. The Lazy River Road from that night is top shelf. Mindset man, mindset. I started to relate to the song meaningfully during the Ratdog years. Until Hershey I had been chasing that sandwich for a while!
Eyes, Althea, and Quinn were my favorites. About 5 rows behind me a group of young ladies were going full on Mayermania with it. "I think he sings this one!" "Yes!" Squeel! The energy was infectious. Hearing them enjoy something I've loved for so long is always heartwarming.
Death Don't was glorious. I need to reference the tape still. I don't recall the Chicken Parm and as a Fatman Santa Type, I love Anything Parm!
Quinn! My only one was Alpine 88. Monsignor Quinn from Chicago, was a family friend growing up, so I always think of him when I hear it. I agree with Dean. I hope they "rehearse" it some more. Preferably on stage at Wrigley!
